What makes a token a utility token?
A utility token provides access to a specific product or service within a blockchain ecosystem. Unlike governance tokens (which grant voting rights) or security tokens (which represent ownership), utility tokens are consumed or staked to use a network's services. The demand for the token is tied to the demand for the service.
The DePIN revolution
Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks (DePIN) are one of the fastest-growing crypto categories. Projects like Filecoin, Render, and Helium use token incentives to coordinate physical infrastructure — storage drives, GPUs, and wireless hotspots — contributed by individuals around the world.
Evaluating utility token fundamentals
The key question is: does the service create real demand for the token? Look at active usage metrics (storage filled, compute jobs processed, queries indexed) rather than just token price. A utility token's value should ultimately correlate with the usage of its underlying service.
Token velocity and value accrual
High token velocity (tokens changing hands quickly without being held) can suppress price even with high usage. The best utility tokens have mechanisms that encourage holding — staking requirements, lock-ups, or burn mechanisms that reduce supply as usage grows.
